The MNFOP is pleased to announce we have made improvements to our Legal Defense Plan effective July 31st, 2023. We have decided to allow members to choose an a la carte plan that fits their needs. The National Legal Defense Plan for on duty incidents. The National Plan for Retired/conceal and carry coverage. The State Legal Plan to cover off duty criminal and administrative/employment civil proceedings which are law enforcement related. Our plan continues to be the only legal defense plan in Minnesota that covers on and off duty incidents for criminal charges. A major benefit of pairing with the National Plan is there will no longer be a cap on duty related experts and expenses. Experts in officer involved shootings have become increasingly crucial and expensive. In addition, the National plan also covers appeals. Our state attorney Rob Fowler will continue to administer our off duty coverage part of the plan, and he also has been and continues to be an attorney on our National Plan. We have added the Carlson Law Firm to our plan.

The Minnesota FOP is opening our State coverage plan to other lawyers or firms who would be interested in serving the needs of Law Enforcement Officers throughout Minnesota. Please review and contact Bryan Klassen at the address included for further information.

Below you will find coverage documents for both the National Legal Defense Plan, as well as our State Plan. The FOP strives to provide you with the best coverage possible as an officer. We need to separate the National and the State Plan payment to ensure members choose the options that best fit their individual needs. Any member in good standing is eligible to enroll in the plan. Your coverage will start once your local lodge application has been received and approved by the Grand Lodge and payment has been processed.

For those members who participate in a group plan where your enrollment in LDP is paid by your agency, union, etc. you do not need to change anything. The FOP will be in contact with your group to design a continuation of coverage.
