Each year, between 140 and 160 law enforcement officers lose their lives in the line of duty, leaving behind devastated families and colleagues to navigate an unimaginable loss. Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.), a national organization with a dedicated Minnesota chapter, steps in to provide critical support to these survivors, helping them rebuild their shattered lives. With no membership fee—because, as C.O.P.S. acknowledges, the price paid is already too high—the organization offers a lifeline to those grieving the loss of a fallen officer.
A Legacy of Support Since 1984
Founded in 1984 with just 110 members, C.O.P.S. has grown into a nationwide network of over 51,000 members across more than 50 chapters. The Minnesota chapter, accessible at mncops.org, is a vital part of this network, working at the grassroots level to provide tailored support to survivors in the state. Minnesota has seen a staggering number of officer deaths in recent years, making the work of C.O.P.S. more critical than ever.
Comprehensive Services for Survivors
C.O.P.S. is committed to offering a wide range of free services to survivors, ensuring they receive both emotional and practical support. At the heart of their mission is peer support and grief counseling, provided by board members trained to assist survivors during their darkest moments. Beyond emotional care, C.O.P.S. offers:https://www.mncops.org
Financial Assistance and Scholarships: Helping ease the financial burdens that often follow a line-of-duty death.
Survivor Retreats and Networks: Creating spaces for survivors to connect, share experiences, and heal together.
National Police Week Assistance: Supporting families attending events to honor fallen officers.
Annual National Conference: Bringing survivors together for community and resources.
C.O.P.S. also plays a crucial role in the immediate aftermath of a line-of-duty death. Their trained board members assist with funeral planning, guide departments through administrative tasks like securing Public Safety Officer’s Benefits (PSOB), and ensure fallen officers are enrolled in national and state memorials.
A Community Effort in Minnesota
The Minnesota chapter of C.O.P.S. has been a beacon of hope for local survivors, addressing the unique challenges faced by families and co-workers in the state. Recently, the Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police Foundation donated $2,000 to support the chapter’s efforts, a testament to the community’s recognition of C.O.P.S.’ vital work. This donation underscores the urgency of their mission, particularly as Minnesota grapples with a high rate of officer deaths in recent years.
Honoring the Fallen, Supporting the Living
The loss of a law enforcement officer reverberates through families, departments, and communities. Minnesota C.O.P.S. stands as a pillar of strength, offering survivors the tools and support they need to navigate their grief and rebuild their lives. Through their tireless efforts, they ensure that no survivor walks alone—and that the sacrifices of fallen officers are never forgotten.
